Last week the OHSAA sent a message to all member schools to answer questions and clarify misunderstandings regarding the OHSAA spirit event scheduled for December 11, 2021.
The email began with the following statement by OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute.
“While the OHSAA has not sanctioned the sport of cheerleading, we are welcoming this as a unique opportunity to recognize and support sideline spirit. The OHSAA continues to encourage participation in the OASSA Cheer and Dance Regional and State Championships.”
The December 11th event is the product of an OHSAA business partnership. It is described as a “unique and fun experience for sideline spirit”. It is intended to recognize students participating in spirit activities during interscholastic events. OHSAA has not made sideline cheer a sanctioned OHSAA interscholastic sport.
OHSAA has publicly stated that they continue to support and encourage Ohio High School participation in the OASSA Cheer and Dance Regional and State Championships. In turn, OASSA sees the OHSAA Spirit event as a great tune-up opportunity for Ohio sideline cheer teams as they prepare for the 30th Annual OASSA Regional competition.
